A Hand in the Darkness Demo Review.

The story follows Alex White, the youngest member of a large family and hence always rather overprotected, into his new stage in life moving to an exclusive boarding school, St. Michaels, during the Edwardian era.

There he will meet some friends: the always cheerful and helpful Monty, the shy and clever Rick, the snob and troublemaker Damian. But he will also face an unexpected danger.

And perhaps, who knows? He will even find true love. It’s up to you to decide if Alex will reach a happy ending or will leave St.Michaels with a broken heart… or maybe even worse.

While the GUI might be simple, the art is this game is really soft but subtle, which I ended up enjoying a lot. The backgrounds are all very detailed but the lighting makes them seem a bit more mysterious than usual and it does a good job setting up the mystery aspect of the game. The characters are drawn well with each of them showing off their personalities in their facial expressions and even the colors that are the center of their designs. If so possible, it would be nice to see what they wear outside of the school uniforms. Nevertheless, there seems to be a lot going on between these group of boys and whatever is going on within the school.

The story begins with Alex White entering the prestigious St. Micheal’s, where he quickly makes friends with his roommate, Monty. The eager young man shows him around the school and introduces him to Rick and Damian. However, Damian doesn’t seem to have the best impress of Alex and they don’t seem to get off on the right foot, especially depending on the player’s choices during a certain scene. Nevertheless, Alex seems to be slowly adjusting to his new environment, though there seems to something attacking him but he doesn’t seem aware of it yet.

I won’t deny that certain actions led to very descriptive situation that surprised me, but due to this it perked my attention as to how Alex’s and Damian’s relationship will develop and if it will harm the potential relationships that he might form with his new group of friends. At the same time, his potential friends all have various degrees of interest in him, so it will be interesting to how that develops throughout the game and whether once he is with someone that will all just be dropped, though it would be nice to see friendships transcend that within an dating sim game. At the same time, there isn’t a lot of mystery and/or ghost activity shown that its piques the interest of the cast, but the player knows that there is something strange going on. It would be nice to see how the plot develops around these occurrences and exactly why there are related to Alex.

There are a lot of mysteries within the story and a lot of possibility for romance and steamy moments together! So, consider checking out the game in either itchio or Steam!
